Frequently Asked Questions

About the Show

What inspired the names of Will and Grace?

  • Creator David Kohan was inspired by a quote from Jewish theologian Marin Buber's I and Thou, "You need the will to pursue a relationship with God, and the grace to receive it." The quote describes two complementary elements of faith, and David thought they would be great names in a story with two complementary people.
  • Where does the show take place?

  • The series takes place in New York City, specifically Upper West Side Manhattan.
  • Where do Will and Jack live?

  • Will's apartment building is located at 155 Riverside Drive. Will lives in Apartment 9C. Jack lives in Apartment 9A (he is subletting from Grace; his rent is paid by his mom, Will, and Karen).
  • Where is Grace's office? What building is that?

  • Grace Adler Designs is located in the Puck Building at 295 Lafayette Street, south of Houston Street.

How old are Jack, Will, Grace, and Karen?

  • Jack was born in 1969 (making him 35 in 2004). Grace was 31 in 1998, so she was most likely born in 1967 (making her 37 in 2004). Grace states that Will was 36 in 2002, so he was probably born in 1966 (making him 38 in 2004). Karen was at least 42 in 2001, but no further details have been given.
  • Where is the show taped?

  • The show is taped at the CBS Studio Center at Studio City, California.

  • Things on the Show or Set

Who is the designer of/Where can I buy the clothes that x was wearing?

  • Go to www.nbc.com and select "Will & Grace". Click the "Wardrobe" Link; your item may be listed there. If not, try contacting the show's costume designer, Lori Eskowitz-Carter. She may be able to answer your question, but I cannot guarantee it. See the "Contacting the Show" section for the address.
  • What is the manufacturer of/Where can I buy the object x in y's apartment/office?

  • Go to www.nbc.com and select "Will & Grace". Click the "Wardrobe" Link; your item may be listed there or in the "Will & Grace" store. If not, contact the show's set decorator, Melinda Ritz. She may be able to answer your question, but I cannot guarantee it. See the "Contacting the Show" section for the address.
  • Who wrote/Where can I buy the music that played in episode x?

  • If I know the answer, it will usually be in the episode's "Notes" section. You can also try contacting the show's music editor, Jack Diamond. He may be able to answer your question, but I cannot guarantee it. See the "Contacting the Show" section for the address. Some music from the show can be found on the soundtrack CD "Will & Grace: Let the Music Out!", available where CDs are sold.
  • Who painted that portrait of the man by Will's fireplace?

  • I have been unable to find any information on the painting. According to NBC.COM Will & Grace Wardrobe section, the portraits are from a private collection. In the Pop-Up version of "Homojo", a pop-up makes a note that the painting resembles Will. (I don't see the resemblance myself.)

  • About Me

Do you work for "Will & Grace" or NBC?

  • No. This is just a fan web site created by another "Will & Grace" fan, just like you!

  • Home Video

Can you buy the show on VHS/DVD/etc.?

  • "Will & Grace: Season 1" will be released on DVD in North America (Region 1) on August 12th as a complete box set. Internationally, Warner Vision France released a set of four Season 1 and 2 DVD's in France (Region 2 Europe, Japan, Southwest Asia, and South Africa). Medusa Comms and Mktg has released a set of three Season 1-4 DVD's in the UK (Region 2). These discs may not play on a North American DVD Player due to the region coding and our incompatible video standard (NTSC vs PAL).
  • Do you have copies of the show on tape that you can send me?

  • Sorry. I don't even have all of the episodes on video tape. Many of my tapes are either dead or missing, or I only had the episode on TiVo. BUT...There is a tape-trading forum on the "Will & Grace Forums" at http://willandgraceforum.com/boards/.
  • How do you make sure that you never miss the show?

  • Buy TiVo and set up a Season Pass! You can set it to only record new episodes or all episodes (including repeats). Get more info on TiVo at TiVo.com.

  • Web Page Content

How long does it take to create all the content for an episode?

  • It takes about four days, which have to be planned around my busy schedule.
  • Do you take requests for sound or video clips?

  • No, sorry. I don't really have the bandwidth or the space on my host to accommodate the multiple requests that I get every day. Due to the amount of time that it takes me to create the content for an episode, I am usually one week behind and normally don't have time to go back to an episode.
  • Why did you switch to Windows Media from Real Player?

  • I began having problems with the old (and free) Real Producer program, and unfortunately, the cost of the new Helix program is way too high. Windows Media Encoder is free and the Movie Maker 2 program is very easy to use. Windows Media 9 Series videos can be played on Windows PCs, Macintosh OS-X, and Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PCs. A version for Linux is being created by InterVideo. The players are free.
  • How do I download clip x from your web site?

  • If you're using Internet Explorer for Windows, right-click the link and select "Save Target As..." and choose a location to save the content to your local hard disk. For Netscape, right-click the link and select "Save Link As...". If you're using a Macintosh computer, hold down the mouse button to pop up the context menu. (Note: For Streaming Media, the download will download the small "loader" file for the media clip, not the actual media file.)
  • How can I save the actual Media Player clips from your web site to my hard drive?

  • SDP (Streaming Download Project) is a free program that captures a Microsoft streaming clip and saves it to a Media Player file. You can download the program at http://sdp.ppona.com/. Sorry, but I can't answer questions on using this program.
  • Can you send me clip x from your web site?

  • You can download the clip yourself, using the above technique.
  • How does the viewer rating/voting feature work? Can I vote more than once?

  • The voting feature allows you to cast your vote on how you felt about a particular episode. The vote is stored in a database and an average rating is calculated and is displayed on the web site. Due to some early abuse, the database only allows you to vote once per episode. If you vote again on a particular episode, it changes your original vote in the database. You can see which episodes are the most popular by visiting the Statistics section, and select "Episode Ranking by Viewer Rating".
  • Can I use content from your web site on my own site?

  • Like most webmasters, I'd rather that you didn't borrow content from my site. That way, everyone's fan pages will give a different experience to web surfers! But, if there is something specific you need, contact me via e-mail.
  • Can I use content from your web site for a different purpose?

  • Please e-mail me directly and we'll try to work something out!
  • Do you need help?

  • If you are willing and able to provide media/audio clips, please e-mail me!
  • I can't help with content, but I can donate money.

  • If you would like to donate money to help pay the expenses of keeping the site up and running, please visit the Donate page. There is no obligation to donate. Please feel free to visit my web page as much as you wish at no cost!
