Completely unaware of her special nature, Soji continues her work and captures the attention of the Borg cube research project's executive director. After rehashing past events with a reluctant Raffi, Picard seeks others willing to join his search for Bruce Maddox, including pilot and former Starfleet officer Cristóbal Rios.

• This episode opens after the synth attack on Mars in 2385, where Starfleet cancels the evacuation plan of the Romulans. Picard resigns in protest, and Lt. Commander Musiker was subsequently dismissed. Afterward, Picard retreated to France, and Raffi was left to fend for herself.
  
• This is the first appearance of regular cast member Santiago Cabrera (Cristóbal "Cris" Rios). Rios was a former Starfleet officer, XO of the heavy cruiser U.S.S. ibn Majid. He is now captain of the civilain starship La Sirena.
  
• Santiago Cabrera also portrays the EMH of his ship (though he speaks with an English accent instead of Rios's Spanish accent) as well as the ENH (Emergency Navigator, complete with Irish accent).
  
• Jonathan Del Arco (Hugh) was last seen in the Next Generation "Descent, Part II". Hugh currently serves as the Executive Director of the Borg Artifact Research Institute.
  
• This episode explains why some Romulans have more distinct foreheads. Laris notes the Tal Shiar operative is a Northerner like Zhaban, smacking him in the forehead as she emphasizes northerner.
  
• Raffi discovers Bruce Maddox is on Freecloud, and joins the crew for the ride, but she has no intentions on helping Picard or his mission.
