Dr. Lewis Zimmerman programmed the new Starfleet Emergency Medical Holographic (EMH) Program. The EMH Mark-I hologram is modeled after Dr. Zimmerman's appearance. The EMH also has a built-in diagnostic program, which is a hologram of Dr. Zimmerman.
Dr. Zimmerman then began working on a Long-term Medical Holographic (LMH) Program, which is meant as a replacement for a humanoid doctor in dangerous or deep-space missions. Zimmerman chose Dr. Julian Bashir, chief medical officer on station Deep Space Nine, as the model for the LMH Program. However, he was found to be an unsuitable model due to genetic enhancements.
Dr. Zimmerman also worked on upgrades to the EMH program, currently in the Mark-IV revision.
