• 65 million years in the past, Mars was a thriving lush planet with a space faring civilization.
  
• Mars was attacked by an arachnid species called the Dol'drm, who crashed into the planet, leaving a red, barren wasteland that became Valles Marineris.
  
• The Dol'drm homeworld is the 5th planet of the Sol System, between Mars and Jupiter. The Martians steal the Enterprise's anti-matter and destroy the planet. This caused Mars to shift its orbit, which rendered it uninhabitable, and created the asteroid belt. One of these asteroids hit Earth, causing the extinction of the dinosaurs.
  
• Though Pike turns down a promotion to Admiral, Number One is promoted to Commander.
